PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — Straight off Broadway, the critically acclaimed production of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s Tony Award-winning musical Into the Woods has just announced it’s coming to Philadelphia in April.
The touring cast, which currently features some of Broadway’s stars, will be playing a number of exclusive engagements across the US next year, including the Kimmel Cultural Campus.
“What’s rare about it is that it typically takes about two years for a tour to come off Broadway and then back up,” said Fran Egler, senior director of programming and presentations at the Kimmel Cultural Campus.
“This show has an opportunity to close in New York in January, then open in upstate New York in February, and then be here in April,” Egler said. “This is also the year it’s coming up for the Tony Awards as well. It’s just a rare chance and we had availability at the Miller Theater. So we said, ‘Absolutely!’”
Into the Woods was also adapted into a major film by Disney in 2014 and is now streaming on Disney+.
“This story is a mix of all your favorite fairy tales, in which everyone from Cinderella to Rapunzel to Hans and the Beanstalk takes a journey through the woods with a baker and his wife who are in search of their own needs ,” Egger said. “It’s the cautionary tale of ‘be careful what you wish for.'”
This strictly limited touring engagement runs April 4-9, 2023 at the Kimmel Cultural Campus’ Miller Theater.
Tickets for the general public go on sale on December 16th, but pre-sales for members and partners will begin on December 12th at 10am.
