Aakash Chopra said that although the Punjab Kings (PBKS) decided to use a clear aggressive batting philosophy for IPL 2022, they failed to assemble a team to execute this strategy. The former Indian tennis player added that a lack of confidence has forced the franchise to pull back to some extent, as a result they are stuck somewhere in the middle.
PBKS IPL 2022 campaign is on thin ice. They are languishing in 8th place on the scoreboard, with only 4 wins after 9 matches. The team led by Mayank Agarwal will face the aggressive Gujarat Titans (GT) at DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on Tuesday, May 3.
Previewing the match on his YouTube channel, Chopra shared his views on the Punjab Kings’ aggressive approach and pointed out:
“They tried to adopt a philosophy, but they couldn’t put together the same team. And so their implementation failed. Neither can fully commit to the philosophy until the end. “
The franchise needs to chase 154 to beat the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in their previous game. However, their shot tripped and they were led to 133 to eight. Chopra notes that while PBKS has some tough hits, the lack of depth leaves them vulnerable. He further elaborated:
“For the Kings of Punjab, it was a do or die situation. They need to rush back like cornered tigers. They should have won the last match. Liam Livingstone beat Bishnoi by two points and six and the match seemed destined. However, he made it to Mohsin Khan and the rest is history. They have explosive players but lack the depth to execute that belligerent philosophy. “
Punjab is 88 for three after 12 passes in the chase. Livingstone (18 years old) was caught after Mohsin’s first ball in the 13th round, trying to go overboard. The kings completely disappeared after that.

Sharing his thoughts on Gujarat, Chopra added that they too have been in difficult situations but, unlike PBKS, have always found a way out. Praising the franchise led by Hardik Pandya, he said:
“Gujarat was absolutely brilliant in IPL 2022. No matter what, they try to figure out how to win, usually in the end. David Miller and Rahul Tewatia have stood up in several games. If the others fail, Rashid Khan steps in and becomes frantic with the bat. In two matches, Hardik Pandya hit very well”.
Gujarat has won 8 out of 9 games in their first IPL season so far and is leading the scoreboard.
