Indian leg spinner Piyush Chawla has backed the under-fire Delhi Capitals (DC) captain Rishabh Pant to continue as captain of the franchise for next season’s Indian Premier League (IPL). He admitted the goalie-batsman made some mistakes, noting that the 24-year-old is still relatively new to management and is still learning the tricks of the trade.
Pant was heavily criticized for his lead in DC’s competitive game against the Mumbai Indians (MI) in the franchise’s last league game. He dropped a skier from Dewald Brevis at a crucial point in the game.
Significantly, he refused to go against Tim David for DRS after an appeal case was dismissed. Replays showed the Mumbai batsman had nicked the first ball he encountered. Hitting luck, David hit 34 in 11 balls as MI beat DC by five wickets, knocking them out of IPL 2022.
Despite some negative criticism of Pant’s leadership, Chawla felt DC should stick with him as captain. Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, he said:
“Pant is young and still learning to be a captain. Mistakes happen. Not only Rishabh Pant, every captain can make mistakes. He is one for the future and I’m sure he will learn with time and experience. He’s a street cricketer who will only improve if he keeps leading.”
Delhi narrowly missed qualifying for the IPL 2022 Playoffs. They finished fifth in the points table after the league stage, winning seven and losing the same number of games.
“Don’t think the captain influences his shots in any way” – Chawla on Pant’s bad numbers with the bat
Some critics feel that the added responsibility of leading the team influenced Pants Schlagen. However, Chawla disagrees with the observation. According to him, captain or not, the southpaw will only hit one way. He stated:
“I don’t think the captain affects his batting performance in any way. If the ball is about to be hit, even if it is the first ball he faces, he will run after it. I don’t think the captain had anything to do with his batting performance in this IPL. I wouldn’t even say his form was bad. He hit well and played those impressive cameos but couldn’t convert them into big shots. I would love to see him again at the helm of Delhi next year.”
The aggressive keeper-batter had 340 runs in 14 IPL 2022 games with an average of 30.91 and a batting average of 151.79. He failed to score for half a century and finished the season with the highest score of 44.
