Is Pop Smoke’s murder related to a body found in the barrel?

Law enforcement are investigating a possible connection between the killing of rapper Pop Smoke and the death of an aspiring LA rapper, whose body was found in a barrel in Malibu last month.

Javonnta Murphy’s body was discovered July 31 on Malibu Lagoon State Beach in a 55-gallon barrel. According to police reports, he died from a single shot to the head. Police say the body “decomposed or had been there for a long time.”

The barrel was first found by a lifeguard in the water near the Pacific Coast Highway bridge. A lifeguard swam to the body and discovered Javonnta’s body.

Javonnta was the brother of Jaquan Murphy, one of the five suspects arrested in the 2020 murder of Pop Smoke.

Pop Smoke, real name Bashar Barakah Jackson, was shot and killed during a burglary at his Hollywood Hills rental home hours earlier after accidentally revealing his address on social media.
