Is The Days on Netflix based on a true story?

Yes, The Days is based on the true story of the Fukushima disaster that happened on March 11, 2011. Fukushima is considered the worst nuclear accident since Chernobyl. Several people were injured in the incident. Over 160,000 people were evacuated due to the spreading radiation. Like Chernobyl, Fukushima was classified at level seven on the International Nuclear Event Scale (INES), indicating a major accident.

The nuclear accident was bad enough, but the initiating event, the Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, served as a catalyst and unleashed a chain of devastation that left more than 19,750 dead, over 6,000 injured, and countless more missing. It devastated the entire region. The tsunami cut power to the power plant, causing Fukushima’s three nuclear reactors to melt down.

The cleanup after the Fukushima disaster is underway

The cleanup is underway and according to a report by AP News Once released in 2022, the government expects it will take at least another 29 years to complete.

At the time of publication of the article, almost 900 tons of molten nuclear fuel remained in the damaged reactors. Workers were scheduled to begin hauling away the treated radioactive water this spring, but the AP reported that Japan “has no final disposal plans, even for the high-level radioactive waste that comes from ordinary reactors.”

The days is now streaming on Netflix.
