Israel, Lebanon Near Maritime Border Deal, Opening Up New Gas Source for Europe

Israel and Lebanon are close to reaching a US-brokered deal on a maritime border that would allow Israel to export gas to Europe and mark a rare example of economic cooperation between the neighbours.

According to Israeli and Lebanese officials, the current draft of the agreement gives Israel full control of the disputed Karish gas field in the Mediterranean Sea. Officials said the Qana gas field further north would be under Lebanese control, but Israel would maintain a stake in the gas sector on its territory. Both countries have signaled that they will accept the draft agreement delivered to them last week after some final negotiations and due diligence.
