GAZA CITY — For months, Ahmed Hussein has left his home before dawn in this impoverished and overcrowded Palestinian enclave to work in Israel, earning about $90 a day. His greatest fear is a new outbreak of hostilities between Israel and Hamas that would close the border and cost him his job.

“We don’t need and don’t want any further escalations because that means no more work,” says the caretaker, whose income is the main source of income for his family with eleven sons and two daughters.
