Issey Miyake Bag: The Coolest Way to Carry Your Stuff This Summer Only Costs $100

For years I shipped my stuff in two things: a canvas tote and a 2010 Ford Focus. Then I moved to New York, ditched the Focus and downsized it to just the tote. My commute to work involves taking my laptop and books (mostly for aesthetic purposes, naturally) to the quietest coffee shop in my neighborhood, before I land a contract. performing required me to enter an actual office. Give a little. A world-changing event followed, and I rarely have to carry my laptop anywhere anymore, making my tote bags almost obsolete — and making me very grateful for any which bag is sewn into my clothes. But while I love some merchandise pants, I really don’t like stuffing them with stuff; Their bags are like the novels I used to carry — mostly decorative.

Then, a few months ago, I closed my eyes to the Issey Miyake Trunks Pleats bag, and reader, I was disappointed by it. It stands out, it’s sculptural, it feels almost alive in the way it shrinks and expands to accommodate the interior. Plus, it comes in a million different colors and is made from lightweight recycled polyester that’s prettier than canvas but just as durable. And, thankfully, it doesn’t have the magazine logo splashed across the front — even a cool logo like GQ’s.

Most of Miyake’s most popular and widely recognized designs feature densely packed superfine folds. Trunk bags, however, are constructed using larger pleats reminiscent of accordion bellows. I’d like to think that Miyake was struck by the tunes of a talented troubadour or Weird Al Yankovic, but the bag was actually inspired by tree, hence the name. Does it look like a tree? Uh, sorta. If you squint, maybe. It’s called impressionism, honey! Hey, it might not be hanging in the MoMA, but it happens to be on sale in the museum’s Design Store, which, if you ask me, is close enough.

And while most Miyake articulations (not to mention blue-chip impressionist masterpieces) will cost you a pretty penny, this bag retails for just *check note* 100 dollars. It’s not enough to buy a wheezing Ford Focus, but if you’re looking to up your tote game it’s a great place to start.
