Chelsea Player of the Year Pat Nevin believes the new owners of his former club will have to tie key players to new contracts when they arrive.
The Blues confirmed on May 7 that a consortium led by billionaire Todd Boehly will take over the club, with the purchase expected to be completed by the end of May. The statement marks the end of the ownership saga at Stamford Bridge.
With the big picture becoming clearer, Chelsea will now need to focus on keeping their best players in the squad, which is proving difficult. Antonio Rudiger has reported Terms have been agreed with Real Madrid while Andreas Christensen, Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso are reportedly set to move to Barcelona.
Nevin, who played for the Blues from 1983 to 1988, believes the new owners will have a big job in their hands. He told Football Insider:
“There is a lot that will need to be handled when this new owner arrives. It’s like taking over Newcastle. There’s a lot of T’s to get through and I’ll mark it. That’s a lot of work in a short amount of time. “
The former Scotland winger added:
“I think there are a lot of players who need to be tied up. They want to know where their future lies. The uncertainty didn’t help them. Players like Mason Mount will want stability and a long-term future at a club he clearly loves. ”
“That can only happen when everything is signed. They need to focus on keeping core players at the club and building on that. ”
As things continue, Thiago Silva, N’Golo Kante and Jorginho will be out of contract in the summer of 2023. Additionally, Mount, Mateo Kovacic, Christian Pulisic and Ruben Loftus-Cheek will become free agents at the end of the year. 2023-24 Season.
Chelsea will end the season well after a string of poor results
Chelsea have struggled in recent weeks, leading to poor results. They have only won 2 of the last 6 matches in all competitions and the defense seems to be quite shaky.
This was best demonstrated in their 2-2 draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League over the weekend. Leading 2-0 when entering the last 15 minutes of the game, coach Thomas Tuchel’s army let Wolves score twice, including one deep in injury time.
Now they will focus on finishing the season well. The Blues will travel to Leeds United’s stadium on May 11 before playing the FA Cup final against Liverpool at Wembley on May 14. Chelsea will end the season with Premier League encounters with Leicester City and Watford.
