It’s All Cake After My Yom Kippur Fast

I am a vegetarian Yom Kippur. My parents do not fast and my wife does not. Most American Jews do not fast. Forty percent of American Jews fast all day, according to a 2016 study by Pew.

In the morning Yom Kippur, my wife, Alice, eats cereal for breakfast, and I clear the dishes from last night’s big meal. For lunch Alice eats a peanut butter and honey sandwich. Does honey have any religious significance? I do not belive that thing. In the afternoon, Alice makes a dish for the evening’s hearty meal, known simply as a “quick snack”. She often prepares mushroom and spinach frittata dishes that make the whole house smell. She is torturing me. Strong. Yom Kippur is not supposed to be a picnic. It is the Day of Atonement.
