James Garfield arrested: High Road School teacher accused of raping 15-year-old student in Wilmington, Delaware

WILMINGTON, Delaware (WPVI) – A teacher in New Castle County, Delaware is now behind bars after allegedly raping a 15-year-old student.

James Garfield was taken into custody on Friday. He is charged with double rape and other related offenses.

According to authorities, Garfield works at the High Road School in Wilmington.

A now-deleted page on the school’s website listed Garfield as the 2021-2022 Teacher of the Year. Part of his bio read, “Garfield loves to build relationships with each and every student.”

Garfield was also recently named Campus Teacher of the Year.

Investigators say the student came forward and said he was having a sexual relationship with his teacher, “Mr. James”.

Garfield was taken into custody after police searched his home on the Norway Avenue apartment block.

Police fear there could be more victims. They ask anyone with information to contact them at 302-395-2756.

Garfield has been suspended, according to Head Girl Jennifer Leckstrom.

Police say he is currently being held on $200,000 bail.

The High Road School at 1200 N. French St opened in 2004. According to its website, the school offers an “intensive, structured, individualized special education program designed to strengthen each student’s academic and organizational skills, social and emotional skills, and sense of responsibility, professional skills, and self-esteem.”

We have high expectations of our team members and owe no less to our students and their families. As an organization, we take every offense.” against our policies seriously.

When school officials learned of the arrest of the now-suspended staff member, we immediately notified families and our partner school districts. We are cooperating fully with the New Castle County Police Department as their investigation continues.

The hiring process for our school includes mandatory background checks, appropriate license verification and reference checks. We adhere to Delaware laws and best practices when hiring employees. There have been no previous incidents or allegations involving this person.

While we cannot discuss in detail specific situations involving minors or an active investigation, we believe the alleged misconduct was an isolated case and we remain fully committed to providing our students with a safe environment to offer.”
