Jamestown Colony: Facts & history

Jamestown, founded in 1607, was the first successful permanent English settlement in what would become the United States. The settlement existed for nearly 100 years as the capital of the Virginia colony, but it was abandoned after the capital moved to Williamsburg in 1699.

The history of Jamestown (sometimes spelled Jamestowne) includes human cannibalism, enslaved people forcibly brought from Africa and children kidnapped off the streets of London and taken to the colony. Jamestown is the “creation story from hell,” wrote Karen Ordahl Kupperman, a professor of history at New York University, in her book “The Jamestown Project (opens in new tab)” (The Belknap Press of Harvard University Press, 2007).
