Johnny Depp’s Legal Saga VS Amber Heard Continues – Files Notice Of Appeals In Virginia Court

It looks like it’s not over for Johnny Depp until it’s actually over. There are new reports that the Hollywood actor has filed an appeal with the Virginia Court of Appeals a day after his former partner Amber Heard filed her own over the outcome of the multimillion-dollar defamation case. Here’s what you need to know.

The documents, filed Friday in Fairfax County, read: “Plaintiff and defendant in the counterclaim, John C. Depp, II, hereby appeals to the Virginia Circuit Court of Appeals all adverse judgments and the final decision of that district court, which was rendered in June 24th, 2022.”

Meanwhile, Heard’s legal team filed a memorandum alleging errors made during the trial prevented a “just and fair judgment” from being rendered. The actress’ filing comes shortly after Judge Penney Azcarate, who oversaw the six-week trial at Fairfax County District Court, dismissed her legal team’s allegations of improper jury work.

“We believe the court made errors that prevented a just and fair trial consistent with the First Amendment,” a spokesman for the actress said after the filing was filed. We are therefore appealing the verdict.”

Back in June, Depp told a group of fans at one of his UK concerts last week that he was “shocked” to have won his defamation lawsuit against Amber Heard. A video reportedly shows Depp laughing as dozens of admirers congratulated him on this week’s win as he emerged from friend Jeff Beck’s concert in Newcastle. “Thanks, I’m still in a little bit of shock,” Depp revealed to a cheering fan.

After the verdict, Heard said she was “heartbroken” but “even more disappointed at what this verdict means for other women.” Heard said the verdict “turns back the clock”, adding that Mr Depp’s lawyers managed to get jury members to “overlook” freedom of speech.

“I am sad that I lost this case. But I’m even sadder that I seem to have lost a right I thought I had as an American — to speak freely and openly,” she said in a statement shared on social media.
