Jury selection has begun in the federal trial of disgraced singer R. Kelly.
“This is a problem for potential jurors who have a mountain of information about the specific allegations in this case and the witness stories that are central to this trial that may or may not be admissible,” wrote Kelly’s attorney, Jennifer Bonjean. “Allowing a person to sit on that jury who has seen ‘Surviving R. Kelly’ is no different than allowing a juror to sit on that jury who in this case was allowed to preview the to see discovery.”
R. Kelly’s team asked the judge to release anyone who had seen the documentary “Surviving R. Kelly.” US District Judge Harry Leinenweber denied the request to question the jury, but Kelly’s team was allowed to ask them how much of the documentary they had seen, what they remembered, and whether they felt they could be impartial.
Of the 60 potential jurors, over 30 survived the first round of questioning.
