Kenya Opposition Leader Rejects Presidential Election Results, Risking Turmoil

NAIROBI, Kenya – Leader of the opposition Raila Odingadeclared the loser in Kenya’s presidential election last week, dismissing the results on Tuesday and promising to contest them William Ruthovictory in court.

Mr Odinga’s move risked throwing the hard-fought race into a crisis and raised fears that Kenya could face renewed partisan and ethnic violence that killed some 1,100 people after disputed 2007 elections. In this race, Messrs. Odinga and Ruto competed against the same opposition ticket and their supporters fought supporters of the then President for months Mwai Kibaki.
