Aptly named in the trailer for Harry and Meghan’s Netflix documentary Harry & Megan, the two talk about the hierarchy of the royal family and the struggles they faced during their marriage with tabloids, rumors and with their own family members. “It’s really hard to look back on it now and be like, ‘What on earth happened?'” Harry said in a voiceover. “There is a hierarchy in the family. You know, there are leaks, but stories are also being planted.” “It’s a dirty game,” he said. “The pain and suffering of women marrying into this institution – this binge eating,” according to footage showing his mother Princess Diana and Kate Middleton being pursued by paparazzi. Meghan then says, “I realized they will never protect you.” Volume one of the documentary is scheduled for release on December 8, 2022, while volume two of the documentary will be released the following week, on December 15, 2022.

The documentary comes a year after Oprah’s bombshell interview with the Sussexes as they discussed why they left the British royal family in January 2020. At the time, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced on their Instagram that they had decided to step down as “working” members of the royal family to relocate from London to North America.

“After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have decided to make a transition this year and begin to carve out a progressive new role within this institution,” the couple wrote in a statement at the time. “We intend to step down as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work towards becoming financially independent, whilst continuing to give our full support to Her Majesty The Queen. With your encouragement, especially over the past few years, we feel ready to make this adjustment.”

In one instance in the interview, Meghan Oprah revealed that during her pregnancy with Archie, various members of the royal family “expressed concerns and conversations about how dark his skin might be when he’s born.” Meghan continued, “There are several conversations, possibly, and what that would mean or look like.” Harry also revealed that the royal family’s lack of support for Meghan regarding racism and bullying on social media was one of the main reasons why the couple has gone. He added that it has the potential to become very scary. “I think the biggest turning point for me was this union, we, I have a girlfriend, was going to become one thing. Of course it was,” he said. “[We left because of] lack of support and understanding.”

Harry also revealed that Charles “has stopped using [his] Calls” after he and Meghan announced their decision to step down as senior members of the royal family. Harry denied he had “taken by surprise” his father or grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, with his and Meghan’s announcement.

The series was announced in 2020 when Harry and Meghan’s company Archewell Productions struck a deal with Netflix said to be worth around $100 million. According to the streaming company, “The series explores the clandestine days of their early courtship and the challenges that led them to feel compelled to step down from their full-time roles at the institution. With commentary from friends and family members, most of whom have never before spoken publicly about what they saw, and historians debating the state of the British Commonwealth today and the Royal Family’s relationship with the press, the series does not shed light just a couple’s love story, it paints a picture of our world and how we relate to each other.”

The series is led by documentary filmmaker Liz Garbus, who also directed Ghosts of Abu Ghraib, Bobby Fischer Against the World, Love, Marilyn, and wWhat happened Miss Simone? “It’s nice to be able to entrust our story to someone – an experienced director whose work I’ve long admired – even if that means it might not be how we would have told it,” Meghan revealed in her diversity cover story. “But that’s not why we’re telling it. We entrust our story to someone else, and that means it’s going to go through their lens.” In her interview with The Cut, she went on to praise Liz’s work. “What’s so funny is I’m not trying to be shy. “I don’t read the press. So I don’t know what is confirmed. I’m telling you, Liz Garbus is amazing.”

My husband has never worked there [the entertainment] industry before,” she said. “For me after working on it suits, it’s so amazing to be around with so much creative energy and to see people working together and sharing their own viewpoints.
