Kyler Murray’s new $230 million Arizona Cardinals contract mandates four hours of weekly film study, source says

TEMPE, Ariz. – Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray’s recently signed contract extension includes an addendum requiring him to study film four hours a week during the season to honor his new contract.

The clause is called “Independent Study Addendum”. A source who saw the contract confirmed to ESPN that the addendum, first reported by NFL Network, is included in the contract.

According to the contract, Murray must “study material provided to him by the club in preparation for the club’s next upcoming game”. According to the contract, Murray will receive “credit” for the completion of his film studies. However, the addendum states that time Murray spends studying in mandatory meetings does not count, nor does Murray receive credit for not “personally studying in good faith” the material provided.

The addendum also states that Murray will not receive credit if he does not study or view the material while it is playing on his tablet, or if he does anything that may distract him or direct his attention to something else while the material is playing will, e.g. B. Playing video games. TV or surf the internet.

Failure to comply with the requirements of the Addendum means that Murray will be deemed “in default” on its contract as the terms of the Agreement read. The addendum begins this season and lasts through 2028, when the Cardinals can pick up a club option.

Murray agreed to an extension on Thursday. It’s worth up to $230.5 million, with about $105 million guaranteed at signing and $160 million for injuries.

Teams routinely include clauses in contracts requiring players to train off-season, meet specific weight goals, or other specific goals, but it is believed that a clause requiring a player to learn more outside of team meetings is unusual if not unprecedented.
