KYLIE MINOGUE is still defying all odds.
The Aussie Pop Princes have become the first woman over 50 in years to have a solo song on Radio 1’s playlist, forcing the station to abandon its age rating.
The youth channel says it selects tracks based solely on “musical merit” and “target audience,” and had rejected Kylie’s new single “Padam Padam” for weeks even though it was rocketing up the charts.
But the broadcaster had to do a U-turn and put the track on its C-list, meaning it will run regularly.
Ridiculously, it’s the first time since 2010’s ‘Get Outta My Way’ that 55-year-old Kylie has made Radio 1’s playlist as a lead artist, despite having released three No. 1 albums since then.
The station has been accused of being anti-age and sexist for refusing to play the lead singles from Madonna’s last two albums, much to the annoyance of her fans.
But Kylie is enjoying a second win over the broadcaster.
When the bosses felt their 2000 hit “Spinning Around” wasn’t good enough for the playlist, they were forced to consume their words, only to add it as it became a big hit and eventually charted at #1.
The last woman over 50 to have her own song featured on Radio 1 was American producer Honey Dijon with Not About You in 2020.
Padam Padam rose to No. 9 on Friday – Kylie’s 35th top ten – and last night’s chart data suggested it was at No. 7.
Shania Twain and Madonna feature on the station’s playlists, but only as featured artists on the titles of younger acts.
Hopefully Kylie’s success sets a precedent and shows that young people can enjoy the music of a woman over 50 – surprise, surprise.
It would be a sad and boring world if we were forced to only listen to people our age.
And no doubt a lot of young people who listen to Radio 1 will join in when Kylie comes along.
Queens of the Stone Age @ Piece Hall, Halifax
QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE stormed into the set at deafening volume before headlining the Other Stage in Glastonbury this Sunday
It was their first time playing UK soil since appearing at Finsbury Park, north London in 2018, but it was like they had never been away as they performed four songs from the classic albums Songs For The Deaf and Like played clockwork.
The American rockers around Josh Homme also presented five songs from their new album “In Times New Roman”, which will be released tomorrow at number 2.
Audiences loved the tracks, especially Emotion Sickness and Carnavoyeur.
At Worthy Farm they will be up against a set by Sir Elton John but as Josh says he loves it when the odds are against them.
These guys are not going to go down quietly and I can’t wait to hear it.
A touch of class, MICHELLE
MICHELLE KEEGAN shows off an amazing butt on a Sunshine yacht trip.
The Brassic actress, who shone in this white fishnet skirt, was joined by husband Mark Wright and friends for the private day trip in Ibiza.
And they certainly spent money on their fun on the water.
Their luxury boat is rented out for more than £2,000 a day and they also drank top-shelf wine as they partied ahead of their friends’ wedding.
The couple are making the most of a rare gap in their schedule after Michelle was in Australia filming BBC1’s hit series Ten Pound Poms, while Mark was touring the UK with his father and brother for his show A Wright Old Adventure.

JASON’S WILD BIDDING WAR
JASON DERULO’s career almost ended after struggling to get signed to a label during a career slump in 2019 – and then almost got sued.
I shared at the time how the Swalla singer parted ways with Warner Records due to creative differences, but things got difficult soon after.
He explained, “I figured I could easily get a new deal with any label I wanted. At that point I had sold 200 million records.
“I’ve been to different labels and they kept saying I was too expensive or not what they were looking for.”
Shortly after, he sampled the viral TikTok song Laxed (Siren Beat) on his track Savage Love, which became his fifth No.1 single in the UK charts.
However, little did he know upon release that the original song’s creator, New Zealand producer Jawsh 685, had signed his own deal with Columbia Records – and the label was furious with Jason.
The US star said: “Columbia went mad and tried to put it down.
“They sent warning letters and stuff like that.
“But by that point, Savage Love was everywhere…I couldn’t have gotten it out of the way even if I tried.”
But the saga eventually reinvigorated his career and landed him a new deal with Atlantic Records, making him labelmates to Ed Sheeran and Anne-Marie.
In his new book, Sing Your Name Out Loud, out next week, Jason added, “After all these approvals, we suddenly found ourselves in the middle of a massive bidding war.”
PLANES, trains and cars aren’t jazzy enough for Robbie Williams – he prefers more extravagant modes of transportation.
I am told that after his headline appearance at the Isle of Wight Festival on Sunday night he chartered a hovercraft which required special permission to cross the River Solent in the dark.
But he only used that to get his band and dancers back to the mainland and instead decided to stay the night and then catch a helicopter to fly him back to London.
The rock DJ singer had wrapped up the festival with a band set and must have gotten a fortune for it considering how much he spared for transporting his crew.
In the current economic climate, Robbie should jump on the ferry as it could save him several thousand euros.
He’s spending this summer touring across Europe on his XXV tour to celebrate 25 years as a solo artist and will no doubt have chartered another extravagant mode of transport.
He will perform at Bergen Calling in Norway tonight and at the Telenor Arena in Oslo on Saturday.
If only we could all live like the rich and famous.
CHAMPIONS JUMP TO GLASTO
GLASTONBURY isn’t just about seeing some of the biggest names in music.
A lot of the best sets I’ve seen come from the most obscure artists out there.
So I’m more than excited to hear The Master Musicians Of Joujouka play an hour-long set at the festival’s celebrity haunt, The Rabbit Hole, on Friday.
The crazy band, consisting of 12 boys with horns, fifes and drums, was discovered in the Moroccan mountains in the 70s by the late Rolling Stones legend Brian Jones.
They have been friends with Glasto CEO Michael Eavis ever since.
I wouldn’t be surprised if he made his way across the farm to see her too.
OLLY’S STAG DARES
OLLY MURS’ friends did everything they could to embarrass him at his bachelorette party.
The pop star and The Voice trainer posted this snap from his wild weekend in the sun wearing a t-shirt with a list of his daredevils – all with a tick have.
Challenges completed included licking the head of a bald man, drinking a pint through a sock, wearing his pants untucked for an hour and finding the phone number of a girl with a foreign accent.
I can’t imagine his wife-to-be, Amelia Tank, would have been too pleased about that.
IT’S AN OUI, OUI FOR RIRI
Rihanna seemed ready as she wore this crop top to show off her pregnancy bump.
She’s approaching her due date for her child with rapper boyfriend A$AP Rocky, but that didn’t stop her from supporting pal Pharrell Williams at his Louis Vuitton menswear runway show.
He is the creative director and designed the range that will be shown at Paris Fashion Week on Tuesday. So it’s no wonder that a lot of stars were there.
Actors Zendaya and Jared Leto and English footballers Marcus Rashford and Jude Bellingham were spotted there sitting with American basketball star Jaylen Brown.
