Todd Phillips’ sequel news Joker the movie premiered in early June, and now we’ve been given a prime ball for what to expect from a sequel to the nihilistic clown series. As first reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Lady Gaga has officially joined the cast to play the Joker’s partner and actor Harley Quinn, and it looks like the movie will be a musical.
Gaga tweeted a teaser on August 4 confirms the news, as well as rumors that Joker: Folie à Deux will release on October 4, 2024. The clip follows up with reports that filming will begin on Last year. The Wrap announced through inside knowledge that the film will take place largely in Arkham Asylum, where the first film ends with Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck. This would make sense as “folie à deux” roughly translates to “shared madness,” and in most iterations, the refugee camp is where Quinn and the Joker met, as she served as a doctor with whom he eventually metamorphosed.
The prospect of casting Gaga is a fascinating one. She proved her acting skills with a high rating A star was born and in Gucci house she embodies a strong command of the melodrama genre. The first Joker the film straddles the line between psychological drama and dramatic tragedy, and Gaga could prove a suitable foil for Arthur Fleck. She’s skilled enough to keep up with the film’s changing tune, and obviously, if the musical angle proves right, she’ll lead the cast in that movie.
The role of Harley Quinn in the most recent live action was played by Margot Robbie in Suicide Squad, Birds of Prey, and Suicide Squad. In 2021, comic source That Hashtag Show reported that Warner Bros. Birds of Prey sequel, but that Robbie won’t reprise his role. Phillips has previously said that he will not incorporate Robert Pattinson’s Batman character into Joker movies, so it doesn’t appear to have any connection to other existing DC Comics movies.
The statement that the film would be a musical was even more surprising than having Gaga join the cast. But two of the most widely referenced scenes from 2019 Joker is Phoenix’s gleeful dance down the stairs to the soundtrack of “Rock and Roll Part 2” and another scene of him dancing in the bathroom with one of the scores by composer Hildur Guðnadóttir (which she won an Academy Award), so perhaps that inspired writers to really lean into the musical side of the film.
In an interview with Guardians, Guðnadóttir said she was amazed at how Phoenix’s performance synced with her score. “It is completely unreal to see the physical embodiment of that music. His hand gestures are like the movements I feel when I write music. It was one of the most powerful collaborative moments I’ve ever experienced.” A musical Joker The sequel will obviously provide more opportunities for Phoenix’s kinetic acting style.
