Amid the excitement about her upcoming collaboration with Taylor Swift, Summertime Sadness singer Lana Del Rey said she faces “a little hurdle” with her own work.
Address fans in a video Del Rey, who was posted to her supposedly secret Instagram account on Wednesday, revealed that she had lost her work-in-progress album and a 200-page draft of a book she was writing for publisher Simon & Schuster.
“A few months ago I parked my car in Melrose Place and stepped away for a minute. And the one time I left my backpack in my car, someone smashed all the windows and took it, and in there was my computer and my three camcorders and my hard drives,” she said on her now-deleted Instagram Stories on Wednesday.
The singer said she didn’t back up any of her work to the cloud and wiped her computer. She added that the thief could use her laptop to remotely access her phone and “leak our songs and personal photos.”
Del Rey, who cleaned up her social media accounts in September 2021, said she’s confident in remaking her new album.
“I really want to persevere and make the best art I can, even if I have to start over with my book,” she added. “I will never leave anything in the car again, even if it’s just for a moment.”
Del Rey said she has recently experienced security and privacy issues and expressed concern “about what will be out there as a result of the theft.”
“I just want to bring to light that it’s hard and there’s really nothing to do,” she said. “I can’t really make my devices more secure.”
In the multi-part Instagram video, Del Rey said she “don’t really like sharing things that don’t go to plan,” reiterating that she prefers to remain private on social media. While the promise of new music from the Norman F—Rockwell artist may lure some fans, she had a request.
“Please don’t stop the music when you hear it because it’s not coming out yet,” she said.
“That’s an update I wouldn’t normally give, but I’m concerned,” she said. “Now that this is the third time this has happened I just wanted to address it. So that’s it. Forward and upward.”
