Las Vegas police arrest man in connection to fatal Mirage hotel room shooting

LAS VEGAS– A 54-year-old man was identified Friday as a suspect arrested in the killing of one person and injuring two others during a family dispute in a hotel room on the Las Vegas Strip.

Billy Hemsley was arrested at The Mirage Resort within six hours of the shooting Thursday at 8:30 p.m., Captain Dori Koren and the department said.

A department statement said detectives located and arrested Hemsley in a southeast Las Vegas neighborhood and he was committed to the Clark County Detention Center on suspicion of murder and attempted murder.

It wasn’t immediately clear if Hemsley had an attorney to speak for him ahead of a first court hearing scheduled for Saturday.

The shooting prompted a more than two-hour lockdown after tourists watched as police stormed into the legendary casino and hotel on Las Vegas Boulevard.

The injured women were taken to a hospital. No details were given of their condition and they have not been identified.

Homicide chief Koren told reporters that the shooter had an address in Las Vegas and the incident did not pose a major threat to the public.

A police statement on Friday said it was an argument “with several family members” in an eighth-floor room.

An official at MGM Resorts International, which operates The Mirage, did not immediately respond to messages on Friday.

The Polynesian-style property with a fire-breathing volcano and more than 3,000 rooms opened in November 1989. The property is credited with helping transform Las Vegas from a gambling hub into a luxury resort with international appeal.

MGM Resorts last December announced plans to sell operations at The Mirage to Hard Rock International, owned by the Seminole Tribe of Florida, for nearly $1.1 billion. The new operator plans to replace it with a giant guitar-shaped hotel. The sale is still subject to official approval.
