Tributes are flowing for a “beloved” California business owner who was shot dead by a man who complained that her shop had a Pride flag hanging.

The unnamed person killed 66-year-old Laura Ann Carleton at her Mag Pi clothing store after she “made several derogatory comments about a rainbow flag that was parked outside the store,” the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Office said.

Officers responded to the incident around 5pm on Friday after reports of gunfire being fired. The mother-of-nine was pronounced dead at the scene, the sheriff’s office said in a statement.

The gunman fled the scene on foot but was later located by authorities near Torrey Road and Rause Rancho Road. The unidentified suspect was killed in a “fatal collision” with police.

According to her company website, Laura Carleton began her career in fashion when she was a teenager.
