Laura Carleton shooting latest: California store owner and ‘true LGBTQ ally’ killed in row over Pride flag

Tributes are flowing for a “beloved” California business owner who was shot dead by a man who complained that her shop had a Pride flag hanging.
The unnamed person killed 66-year-old Laura Ann Carleton at her Mag Pi clothing store after she “made several derogatory comments about a rainbow flag that was parked outside the store,” the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Office said.
Officers responded to the incident around 5pm on Friday after reports of gunfire being fired. The mother-of-nine was pronounced dead at the scene, the sheriff’s office said in a statement.
The gunman fled the scene on foot but was later located by authorities near Torrey Road and Rause Rancho Road. The unidentified suspect was killed in a “fatal collision” with police.

Life in Carleton was full of fashion and travel
According to her company website, Laura Carleton began her career in fashion when she was a teenager.
She joined Kenneth Cole almost from the start and stayed with Kenneth Cole for over 15 years as a senior executive, spending most of her time traveling with design teams in Italy and Spain.
She traveled the USA, Europe and South America with her husband, which sparked her love of design, fashion, food, fine arts and architecture, among other things.

Friends, colleagues and community members paid tribute to Laura Ann Carleton over the weekend and mourned the loss of a “remarkable person”.

Suspect shot dead by police
The gunman fled the scene on foot but was later located by authorities near Torrey Road and Rause Rancho Road.
The man died at the scene and officers sustained no injuries, police added.
“Through further investigation, investigators learned that the suspect made several derogatory comments about a rainbow flag that was parked outside the store before shooting Carleton,” authorities said, without clarifying whether the incident would be investigated as a possible hate crime.
Carleton is survived by her husband and nine children.
