A mysterious post featuring a simple egg garnered 57 million likes after it was published in 2019. The internet was captivated by the image, perhaps given how little was known about the post and its account owner. In response to Messi overtaking the crown, the account (appropriately titled @world_record_egg) released a story acknowledging the win.

“Four years ago we embarked on a mission, nine days later we made internet history. Together 🤍,” reads the story text of the egg, “Today @leomessi took the crown (for now 👀).”

It also appears that Messi’s 57 million likes have also surpassed the most-liked post on any prominent social media platform. For Twitter, the record is 7 million, for a tweet the announcement of the tragic death of Black Panther Actor Chadwick Boseman. Luis Fonsi’s music video for “Despacito” has 50 million likes on YouTube. The post also smashed Bella Poarch’s wildly viral 2020 TikTok, which has over 60 million likes.

Essentially, Messi’s celebratory photo dump is the most popular thing on the internet.
