Pittsburgh police respond to an active shooting in the Garfield neighborhood, the Pittsburgh Public Safety tweeted.
Around 11 a.m. ET Wednesday, Pittsburgh Public Safety urged residents to avoid the 4800 block area of Broad Street and North Mathilda Street because of a shooting.
“This is an extremely active situation where shots continue to be fired,” they wrote on Twitter/X about 20 minutes after the incident.
A reporter for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette said that “hundreds of shots” were fired and multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the incident.
Almost an hour later, at around 12 p.m. ET, officers began evacuating residents of nearby homes to safety from the shooting.
The shooting began after officers from the Allegheny County Sheriff’s Office served an eviction notice on a resident when the suspect “became violent and started shooting,” an Allegheny County Sheriff’s Office spokesman said The Independent.
It is unclear if anyone was injured at the time.
FBI assists in shooting
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is assisting the Pittsburgh Police Department in dealing with the active shooting situation, a local reporter tweeted.

Nearby Children’s Hospital is not under lockdown but has ‘enhanced security measures’
Pittsburgh’s University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Children’s Hospital said there would be “enhanced security” on campus and throughout the day due to the nearby shooting.
Children’s Hospital, which is about half a mile from the shooting site, said there was no reason for a lockdown as the suspect was “answered” by law enforcement.

The officer was reportedly injured in an active shootout
A sergeant with the Allegheny County Sheriff’s Office was injured after sustaining an injury not caused by gunfire, a reporter from reported The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
It’s unclear exactly what happened, but the sergeant “was in command” and sustained the “minor injury” while dodging incoming gunfire.
The Allegheny County Sheriff’s Office told the reporter that the officer was fine.

Nearby hospital closed “as a precaution”.
West Penn Hospital, which is less than half a mile from the shooter’s location, is on lockdown as a precaution, the Allegheny Health Network said The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Although the hospital is under lockdown, security guards will let people pass through a metal detector “to make sure they are off the street to ensure their safety”.

Officials bring residents to safety
For nearly an hour, residents in the Garfield neighborhood have been warned of an ongoing shooting.
Police from the Pittsburgh Police Department said around noon that they were evacuating people from homes near the scene. These include homes on the 4800 block of Broad Street.
“If you are inside please take shelter, dial 911 and provide your address and location. Officers will step in to get you to safety,” Pittsburgh Public Safety said wrote on Twitter/X.
