ANAHEIM, Calif. — Angels aide Archie Bradley broke a bone in his right elbow Sunday while climbing over the dugout railing during Los Angeles’ massive brawl with the Seattle Mariners.
Bradley will be out for at least a month, Angels athletic coach Mike Frostad said Tuesday. Bradley will not start a throwing program for four weeks while his elbow heals and he could be out for “a couple of months”, according to Frostad.
Bradley’s injury is the second in the protracted fracas at Angel Stadium: Mariners catcher Luis Torrens was put on the 10-day injury list on Monday with a sore left shoulder.
Bradley slipped and fell off the railing as the brouhaha broke out in the second inning immediately after Angels opener Andrew Wantz hit Seattle’s Jesse Winker with a throw. Bradley didn’t serve on Sunday, nor in Los Angeles’ win against the White Sox on Monday night.
Wantz threw a pitch behind Julio Rodriguez in the first inning on Sunday, a night after Seattle’s Erik Swanson threw a pitch near Mike Trout’s head in the ninth inning. Six players and both managers were sacked after the fight and 12 suspensions were imposed on players, coaches and team staff on Monday.
The heavily bearded Bradley is in his first season with the Angels, who signed him last March to bolster their perennial bullpen. He’s 0-1 for Los Angeles with a 4.82 ERA and two saves in 21 games, but he spent some time on the injured list earlier this season with a stomach strain.
Angels interim manager Phil Nevin served his 10-game suspension on Monday. He declined Tuesday to offer his opinion on MLB’s handling of the brawl and subsequent suspensions.
But Nevin found a silver lining: He will be eligible to return for the third game of Los Angeles’ four-game series in Baltimore next weekend. Nevin’s son Tyler plays for the Orioles and Nevin will be able to enjoy two games as a fan.
