This week, Atlanta police charged Chaka Zulu, the longtime manager of rapper Ludacris, with murder after a shootout in June that police said killed a 23-year-old man.
In a statement to the media, Chaka’s lawyer told the public that the music executive acted in self-defense and dispatched a weapon to carry after he was attacked.
The music manager, whose real name is Ahmed Obafemi, was seriously injured in the shooting on June 26 in the parking lot of a Buckhead shopping mall at Block 2200 of Peachtree Road; his attorney, Gabe Banks, says he is “still recovering from the near-fatal injuries he sustained that night.”
Artez Jamil Benton, 23, a DeKalb County native and recent college grad, was killed in the shooting.
“It is not lost on Mr Zulu that someone has lost their life, but if Mr Zulu had not legally defended himself Mr Zulu would have been killed that night,” Banks said in a statement.
Banks’ full statement was issued to Media Take Out early Sunday:
“Mr. Chaka Zulu, a beloved son of the city of Atlanta, is disappointed by the Atlanta Police Department’s decision to charge him in the June 2022 shooting. A close review of all the evidence, including surveillance footage and interviews with eyewitnesses, reveals that Mr Zulu was attacked from behind by a gang of at least four people (unfortunately including the deceased) and jumped and was forced to defend himself after this gang repeatedly stepped, punched and kicked him while he was lying in a helpless posture. Mr Zulu was shot in the back during the shooting and nearly lost his life and is still recovering from the near fatal injuries he sustained that evening Mr Zulu was at his place of business and had every reason to defend himself In an attempt to save his life, Mr Zulu lawfully discharged his weapon in self-defense, a gun that he is allowed to wear. Mr Zulu fully cooperated with law enforcement officials and their investigation and turned himself in after getting rid of the warrants. Mr Zulu remains confident that the trial will clear his name of all charges. It has not escaped Mr Zulu that someone has lost their life, but had Mr Zulu not defended himself lawfully Mr Zulu would have been killed that night.’
