Man fleeing Bradenton police dies in pond, officers say

MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) – Bradenton Police Department officers responded to a
reported the car theft early Saturday morning when they discovered two men hiding in the porch
of an apartment near Riverside Drive East and Chauncey Avenue East in Bradenton.

As officers tried to arrest the men, one man walked and fled into a pond holding water. When officers asked the man to get out of the water, he refused, a news release said.

A short time later, the man “went down and did not reappear,” according to police.

The Manatee County Sheriff’s Office diving team responded and found the man dead.

Authorities say an investigation is still in the early stages and the man’s name is being withheld until his next of kin are notified. Bradenton police told WFLA an autopsy will determine the man’s cause of death.

Additional information is expected to be released as this investigation continues.
