Manchester United will look to return to their glory days under new manager Erik ten Hag. The Dutchman has handed over the reins at Old Trafford and is likely to make some changes to the squad.

With that in mind, here’s a look at the top Manchester United transfer stories coming May 25, 2022:

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has advised Erik ten Hag to sack Cristiano Ronaldo this summer. The Netherlands manager revealed in his first interview as United manager that he has the Portuguese in his plans.

Recently, however, Carragher urged Ten Hag to follow Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp to sack a player who doesn’t fit his system.

“I’m convinced that Ten Hag has to deal with Ronaldo, whether he’s allowed to or not. I’ve said it again and again this season: It wasn’t a good signing. Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the greatest players of all time and I’m seen as someone who criticizes Ronaldo,” said Carragher.

He continued:

“Ronaldo is a million times better player than ever; I’m obviously not in a position to tie his shoes, but I’m not saying that to be disrespectful to him – he’s great – but Ronaldo has never been in one like that bad team played He’s always played for great teams and his attitude of being the main actor, driving the team forward, scoring goals when you’re on a great team is seen as positive.”

Cristiano Ronaldo scored 24 club goals in his 20th season as a professional. For the 37-year-old, the show must go on 🧪

Adding that United cannot count on Ronaldo next season, Carragher said:

“If you’re not playing for a great team, that can be seen as a negative and I think that’s been the case this season. Man United cannot go into next season with a 38-year-old centre-forward even if he scores. It’s not right for Man United.”

Fabrizio Romano tips Manchester United to sign Darwin Nunez

Fabrizio Romano has backed Manchester United to sign Darwin Nunez. The Red Devils are looking for a new striker this summer to share goalscoring duties with Cristiano Ronaldo.

🗣 – @FabrizioRomano: “Darwin Núñez is tempted by a move to the Premier League. #muffc discussed his name many times internally at the club. I would keep the Darwin Nunez name for Manchester United because he is a player who is sure to make the list.” [@podcastherewego]

Speaking on the Here We Go podcast, Romano said Nunez was hotly debated at Old Trafford.

“He will leave Benfica 100% this summer. I see a lot of rumors about him but I’m told he’s really tempted by (a) move to the Premier League. So the kid would love a move to the Premier League.”

He continued:

“Let’s see what happens this summer too – many clubs are interested. But Manchester United have discussed his name many times at the club. And that’s why I’m going to keep the Darwin Nunez name for Manchester United because he’s a player who certainly is on the list,” said Romano.

Paul Robinson supports David De Gea’s call for mass exodus at Old Trafford

Former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson has backed David De Gea’s call for a mass exodus from Manchester United. The Spaniard recently urged players who don’t want to stay to leave Old Trafford.

Speaking to Football Insider, Robinson said players shouldn’t stick around if they aren’t wanted by the manager.

“Anyone who is not wanted by a manager does not want to stay. United need a major clear out. You need to get rid of the dead wood. Getting rid of this dead wood could be a problem. Many of them are below average with high wages. It could be that United cut losses. The transfer value won’t be there as clubs know United need to move players on. It could be a painful summer for the books, but they need to overhaul that roster,” Robinson said.
