Mario Draghi Resignation Puts Italy’s Leadership in Flux

Unrest over who will lead Italy’s government is growing after PM Mario Draghi Abruptly said he would resign, potentially jeopardizing an economy struggling to find a secure footing following the impact of the coronavirus pandemic and war in Ukraine.

Party leaders immediately began wrestling for their positions when the veteran former European Central Bank chief said he would leave the government after cracks surfaced in the governing coalition over the response to Ukraine’s crisis and a worsening rise in inflation. Some called for early elections on Friday, including the most important ones Giorgia Meloni, leader of Italy’s far-right Brothers. Ms Meloni’s party is leading opinion polls in large part because it is the only major political group outside the coalition that, like other governments across Europe, has come under pressure as prices have steadily risen.
