Unrest over who will lead Italy’s government is growing after PM Mario Draghi Abruptly said he would resign, potentially jeopardizing an economy struggling to find a secure footing following the impact of the coronavirus pandemic and war in Ukraine.

Party leaders immediately began wrestling for their positions when the veteran former European Central Bank chief said he would leave the government after cracks surfaced in the governing coalition over the response to Ukraine’s crisis and a worsening rise in inflation.
