Mastodon has gained millions of new users since Elon Musk bought Twitter

It seems that a Twitter alternative has officially broken out of the pack.

According to an update from mastodonthe open-source, decentralized Twitter alternative, has been rapidly gaining traction since Twitter was acquired by its new owner Elon Musk.

“Mastodon has exploded in popularity lately, growing from around 300,000 monthly active users to 2.5 million between the months of October and November, with more and more journalists, political figures, writers, actors and organizations relocating,” said Mastodon -Creator Eugen Rochko in a statement.

From 300,000 to 2,500,000 users in just one month is quite significant growth, especially for a platform that’s just one of many competing to replace Musk’s messy new Twitter. Earlier last month, just days after Musk took ownership of Twitter, Mastodon divided that it had around 655,000 users. So, this recent update shows that the growth trend was not a one-off surge with new users coming in at any given point in time. Elon Musk’s ongoing antics seem to be helping Mastodon sustain that growth.

It should be noted that these numbers only include mastodon use up to the end of November. It will be interesting to see how December’s growth looks, especially in the immediate aftermath of Musk’s suspension of a handful of journalists who covered him and the ban on the @ElonJet Account. (Disclosure: I’m one of them suspended journalists.)

As someone who opened an account with Mastodon in April, when word first broke that Musk was planning to take over Twitter, the change on this alternative platform was significant.

Mastodon has been around for about six years now and once had a fairly niche audience of tech-savvy users. Now it’s growing far beyond that. Users from all sorts of backgrounds seem to find their way to Mastodon.

Of course, Mastodon is nowhere near Twitter’s much larger user base of around 250 million daily active users. And many Mastodon users still use their Twitter accounts alongside their Mastodon account, so they’re not completely separated from Musk’s own platform just yet.

But in the current social media landscape, it’s always good to have alternatives. And Mastodon makes a compelling case that if you want something different than what Musk is offering, it’s the place to be.
