Mater Dei vs. St. John Bosco tops this week’s high school football games

A look at two of this week’s top high school football games in Southland:

Bellflower St. John Bosco (6-0) vs. Santa Ana Mater Dei (6-0) at Santa Ana Stadium, Friday 7:30 p.m

Tickets for this long-awaited showdown, televised by Bally Sports, sold out in minutes. The game is so balanced that the CalPreps.com computer favors the Braves by a single point. The game at Quarterback should be decisive. St. John Bosco’s Pierce Clarkson shared the time of the last two meetings and never developed a rhythm. Mater Dei’s Elijah Brown is 23-0 as a starter and proved unbeatable in the fourth quarter. The St. John Bosco defense has dropped just 24 points in six games. The choice: St. John Bosco.

La Puente Bishop Amat (5-1) at Gardena Serra (3-3), Friday 7pm

It’s a Mission League showdown. Bishop Amat needs to make sure it can handle Serra’s running game and doesn’t make turnovers against Serra’s excellent defense. Serra’s passing game was ineffective and to win the Cavaliers need to be able to play some passes against a good Bishop Amat defense. The choice: Serra.
