Matthew Wolff latest to depart PGA Tour for LIV Golf, sources say

Matthew Wolff, whose meteoric rise early in his PGA Tour career has been as surprising as his struggles in recent months, has become the youngest player to move to the LIV Golf Invitational Series, sources confirmed to ESPN on Sunday.

Wolff, 23, plans to compete in the LIV golf tournament at Pumpkin Ridge in Portland, Oregon this week, the first to be held in the United States. An announcement is expected on Monday.

Wolff, whose unorthodox swing made him one of the most popular young players on the tour, finished 40th in Sunday’s Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut. It may have been his last PGA Tour start, as Commissioner Jay Monahan has suspended members indefinitely once they serve at a LIV Golf event.

The Telegraph of London first reported Wolff’s departure from the PGA Tour.

Wolff, a star player at Oklahoma State, turned pro in June 2019 and won less than a month later while playing at the 3M Open bar one sponsor. Wolff made a 26-foot eagle putt from the green to defeat Bryson DeChambeau and Collin Morikawa on the 72nd hole. He placed fourth at the 2020 PGA Championship, his first start in a major, and finished second at the 2020 US Open with Winged Foot.

But Wolff has struggled a lot in the last two seasons. He took two months off from golf in 2021 to focus on his mental health. He came back at the US Open where he finished 15th. He has missed the cut and failed to make the top 25 in seven of his last 12 starts this season. He ranks 74th in the official golf world rankings.

LIV Golf is also expected to announce the addition of Spaniard Eugenio Chacarra, the second ranked amateur in the world. Chacarra said on Twitter Sunday that he was leaving Oklahoma State and turning pro. He wrote that he was “given an opportunity I could not refuse.”

“It’s one of those trains that goes by once in a lifetime,” Chacarra wrote.
