MEDFORD, NJ (WPVI) — Ah, deer! A New Jersey community is desperate to help a deer that somehow got stuck with a tomato cage on its head.
Medford residents believe the deer was most likely caught searching for something to eat.
But in recent days, the deer has been spotted in the rural neighborhood with the cage hanging from its neck.
Cell phone video shows a resident approaching to help the deer, but ultimately failing to free her from the metal contraption.
A Facebook post about the distressed animal this week prompted residents to take action, including Lily Snow, a veterinarian.
“I called the animal welfare agency, they said they can’t come out for wildlife. I called New Jersey Fish and Wildlife and they also said unfortunately they couldn’t help,” Snow said. “I wouldn’t take no for an answer because she had to be helped.”
Snow said neighbors installed personal wildlife cameras to monitor their route and set up feeding stations in their backyards in hopes of containing the deer to stun them safely and getting the feeder box off their necks.
But time is of the essence, neighbors say. Snow said a fox was now stalking the deer and their two babies.
