A rusty medieval saber or single-edged sword unearthed at a fortified Christian monastery in northern Greece could be a deadly weapon either ambushed by Turkish pirates or used by the monastery’s defenders hundreds of years ago.

The find of the saber is unusual, since iron weapons from this period usually rust quickly.
