Megan Fox on Body Dysmorphia struggles, fixation on her thumbs, favorite interactions with fans

The Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue cover model opens up about her lifelong battle with body dysmorphia in the accompanying interview – she also opens up about the media’s obsession with her thumbs and which public interactions mean the most to her.
Megan Fox is stunning as one of this year’s most coveted Swimsuit issue of Sports Illustrated cover models and even said that they are the best pictures she has ever taken. However, it was not an easy road to reach this point of appreciation.
In the accompanying interview for the magazine, the actress opened up about her lifelong struggle with body dysmorphia. “I never really see myself the way other people see me,” she admitted. “There was never a point in my life where I loved my body. Never, never.”

She recalled struggling with it from a young age. “When I was little, I had an obsession, ‘But I’m supposed to look like this.’ And I don’t know exactly why I was aware of my body at such a young age.
It’s particularly unusual for Fox, she explains, because she “grew up in a very religious environment where bodies weren’t even recognized.”
Still, the young vixen definitely paid attention to her boobs, even sharing that she sometimes went to the bathroom and “checked to see if I had boobs yet.”
“The journey of loving myself will never end, I guess,” Fox shared. The Jennifer’s Body actress first opened up about her struggles with body dysmorphia in an interview with British GQ in October 2021.
“We might look at someone and think, ‘This person is so beautiful. Her life must be so simple,” she told the outlet at the time. “You most likely don’t feel that way about yourself.”
Though she’s spent many years of her life being overly fixated on her looks, Fox wishes people would notice something different about her instead. “I have a rainbow aura and that’s special,” she told SI.

“What I really want to convey to people is that I’m a real soul who hopes to actually belong and not always have to live as a misunderstood outsider,” she said. “If they don’t respect you, it wears you out. And if you keep doing that in a cycle, it will wear down your self-worth and self-esteem. I want all people, not just women, to have respect for their bodies and themselves.
Instead, she knows that over the course of her career, the public, and even the media, may have focused a little too much on her looks and didn’t even look for flaws…or at least gotten fixated on a specific “fault” that they didn’t managed seem to let go.
“I never thought that would be anything weird or awkward,” Fox said of her thumbs, which have become an embarrassingly obsessive topic of conversation for far too many years. “They’re just a little small. Is that really that crazy?”

She explained that it’s actually called the “killer thumb” because apparently the distance between the tip and the first thumb joint is an indication of a person’s mood. That would suggest Fox has a short circuit, but she says that’s far from the case.
“It takes a lot for me to lose my temper, I mean a lot. I’m incredibly patient,” she said. “But if you’re really going to push me over the edge, you’ve got demon time and you better run for your life, and it’s freakin’ scary!”
As for the thumbs themselves, it seems like they’ve had a fixation on them all these years, but Fox herself said she has “heaps of other flaws” that she thinks are even “more interesting,” though she wisely didn’t list any from them up.
Though there’s been plenty of attention over the years that she didn’t appreciate, Fox did reveal what kind of attention she enjoys. It came up when we were discussing the idea of what kind of legacy she wants to leave behind.

As it turns out, Fox is one of those people who doesn’t care too much about the legacy because, as she put it, “What timeline will I be in when I’m dead, and will that matter? It won’t matter.”
Instead, she’s more worried about the impact she’s having now while she’s still here. And here she spoke about what kind of interactions are most meaningful to her and the closest thing to a legacy she’d be excited about, just the way it is.
“I can’t tell you how many girls come up to me and say, ‘You were the reason I realized I was gay.’ Or, “I realized I was bisexual.” Or, “You gave me the courage to tell my parents I’m gay,” she shared. “And that’s so much more gratifying than when someone comes up to me and says, ‘I love your films,’ or ‘You’re so talented.'”

“The greatest compliment I can think of is someone telling me that somehow I helped give them the courage to realize who they are,” she said.
During the shoot itself, Fox said it took her a while to bond with photographer Greg Swales as she felt “a lot of pressure” and even had her own idea of what she hoped to achieve. However, once she settled in and trusted the process, she was able to enjoy the experience.
Looking at the monitor during the shoot, she said the photos were among the “best pictures I’ve ever taken,” and told Swales they were “insane.”
