Megan Thee Stallion shooting trial: Tory Lanez guilty of assault after shooting hip-hop artist Megan Pete in the feet

Los Angeles, California — A jury has convicted rapper Tory Lanez of assault for injuring and shooting hip-hop star Megan Thee Stallion in the feet.

“I would like to begin by emphasizing the bravery of Megan Pete,” LA District Attorney George Gascon said in a statement. “You have shown incredible courage and vulnerability in your testimony, despite repeated and grotesque attacks that you did not deserve.”

The 30-year-old Canadian rapper has been charged with three felonies: negligently discharging a firearm, assault with a semi-automatic firearm and carrying a loaded unregistered firearm in a vehicle. The counts could result in up to 22 years in prison and deportation for the rapper, whose real name is Daystar Peterson. He was convicted on all three counts.

Megan Thee Stallion, 27, whose real name is Megan Pete, testified that Lanez shot her in the back of her feet with a handgun and asked her to dance while walking away from an SUV they were driving in the Hollywood Hills during the summer 2020. She required surgery to remove bullet fragments from her feet.

In closing arguments, prosecutors emphasized the courage it took her to come forward and the vitriol she faced to do so. They said she had no incentive to tell anything but the truth.

Lanez’s attorney claimed in his closing statement that the shots were actually fired by Megan’s then-best friend Kelsey Harris in a jealous fight over Lanez, who was trying to stop the shooting. Attorney George Mgdesyan claims Megan created a more sympathetic narrative by capturing the Lanez shooting.

Harris denied being the shooter and previously identified Lanez as the one holding the gun. Her lawyer declined to comment on her involvement in an email.

The jury on Thursday asked for a repeat testimony of the only eyewitness to the shooting who wasn’t directly involved, a man on a nearby balcony who was with his children at the time and said concern for their safety stopped him watch closely.

Sean Kelly was called by the defense, but both sides argued that his account favored them. He said he saw muzzle flashes that appeared to be coming from a woman, but also said he saw a small man “shooting everywhere”.

Lanez – real name Daystar Peterson – began releasing mixtapes in 2009 and enjoyed a steady rise in popularity before moving onto major-label albums. His last two hit the top 10 on the Billboard charts.

Megan Thee Stallion was already a huge rising star at the time of filming and her notoriety has skyrocketed since then. She won a Grammy for Best New Artist in 2021 and had #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for her own song “Savage” with Beyoncé and as a guest on Cardi B’s “WAP.”
