Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are having an important cause: improving childcare benefits. The couple signed to support the Marshall Plan for Mothers, a movement that fights to end the injustices mothers face in the workplace.
Triple mission – make large-scale changes to the workplace, culture and government to ensure that mothers are seen, heard and valued.
“Families everywhere, and especially working mothers, are asked to shoulder a lot,” said Markle. “This is only heightened by the pandemic, with increased caregiving responsibilities, rising prices and economic uncertainty. As it has been said many times, it takes a village a while to raise a child. Today, we’re sending a message that childcare isn’t just a community duty – it’s a business imperative. Creating a stronger workforce starts with meeting the needs of families.”
The Marshall Plan for Mothers released a report this week that found expanded childcare benefits would “attract, retain, and advance women.” Tell the stats that back this up. More than 1,000 American parents with children aged 0-5 were surveyed and the results showed that 69% of women with children under the age of 5 would be more likely to choose a company that offers benefits such as on-site babysitting. A whopping 83% say that childcare benefits will play an important role in deciding whether they want to stay in their current job or look for a new one.
As a result of those findings, Marshall Plan for Moms established the National Business Alliance in Childcare, which seeks to find solutions for working mothers.
“The input from working parents is clear: an employer’s childcare support can improve employee recruitment, retention, productivity and happiness,” Reshma SaujaniFounder and CEO of Marshall Plan for mothers, said in a statement. “This is not only important to the health and well-being of individual American families, but is central to America’s economic competitiveness.”
Childbirth is nothing like the movies, as these stunning photos show.
