He may have reached the pinnacle of his career when he became world champion with Argentina, but now Lionel Messi must take on the final boss to become the true GOAT. And no, we’re not talking about his era-defining football rivalry with Cristiano Ronaldo.
Messi is in contention with – and you’ll love this – a photo of an egg in the running to be the subject of Instagram’s most popular post of all time. A picture of the 35-year-old raising the World Cup trophy contrasts with a picture of a single egg, which has garnered nearly 56million likes on the social media site as of Tuesday morning.
The photo shared by Messi, titled “CAMPONENES DEL MUNDO!!!!!!!” has attracted 58 million likes as of today since it was first uploaded on Sunday, leading him to take first place in the all- get hold of the time list. However, the lead has been swapped back and forth as some Insta users mobilized to stop Messi from hitting the egg – so to speak.
The egg picture is the only post shared by the responsible anonymous Instagram handle, simply called “@world_record_egg”. The photo was first uploaded almost four years ago to beat Kylie Jenner’s then world record (18 million likes).
Messi’s World Cup post had around 51million likes as of Tuesday morning after the egg – perhaps helped by an influx of likes from Ronaldo fans – surged to the 55million mark. Since then, however, Messi has regained the lead. It remains to be seen if the Paris Saint-Germain star will carve out a lead at the top or if the egg followers can fight for a new assault on the like button.
According to Wikipedia (a dangerous phrase if there ever was one), Messi dominates the list of the most popular Instagram posts of all time as he boasts eight posts in the top 20 overall, while his Portuguese rival has just three.
Interestingly, the two stars together racked up a whopping 74.5 million likes (Ronaldo 42 million, Messi 32.5 million) when they each posted the same picture of the two playing chess on the eve of the World Cup on a Louis Vuitton case in a marketing stunt for the luxury fashion brand.
Perhaps Ronaldo can console himself with the fact that he has significantly more followers on Instagram (519 million) than Messi (402 million). In fact, Ronaldo’s account is the most visited on the entire platform.
However, Messi fans could rightly argue that a real world champion’s medal in the trophy cabinet might trump that particular feat.
