High school bullying, new factions, grief, a scary watch, and (of course) a new monster are the latest troubles the teenagers of Hawkins, Indiana are going through. Stranger Things 4, sequel to Netflix’s ’80s sci-fi horror series. The new season began in 1986, a few months after the Starcourt Shopping Center duel caused telekinetic Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) impotent. The gang split for the first time and a new threat emerges, presenting a gruesome mystery that, if solved, could eventually end the horrors of the Upside Down.
“I cried a lot this season,” Brown said at the show’s world premiere in Brooklyn on Saturday night at Netflix’s new 170,000-square-foot production studio. “This is the most emotional season for Eleven. She’s helpless and trying to fit in a new school and she’s trying to understand who she is and where she comes from. She’s struggling with her identity. and this is the darkest state she’s ever been in. She was sad and I had to cry a lot. I had a hard time crying so much!”
Season four, which will be released in two episodes on Netflix – the first episode on May 27, the second episode on July 1 – takes place in three different locations with various groups of characters leading the three sentences. different story. Mother Joyce Byers was very worried (Winona Ryder) has moved her sons Will (Noah Schnapp) and Jonathan (Charlie Heaton), as well as Eleven, left Hawkins for a desert city in California. Eleven finally gets to experience everyday life as a teenager, but faces severe bullying at her new school.
“We are shedding light on what some kids go through in high school. It was not an easy time for Eleven. She really doesn’t fit. That portrayal of that plot is important to me because it has influence and power,” Brown said. “I wanted to show my fans how horrible it feels to be bullied and hopefully some people can stop doing that. Also, I love El’s persistence. She is sad, but never gives up. I think we can all learn from her.”
In previous seasons of strange things, Will and Eleven don’t share screens much. But this time, “you’re going to see a lot of the non-supernatural sides of Will and Eleven together,” Schnapp said. “This season, I’ve probably worked with Millie the most, and we’ve shared some emotional scenes at school together. I think the fans will really connect with it. Our characters will continue to change and learn new things about themselves.”
One constant for Will is his unflattering but period-appropriate hairstyle. Schnapp laughs: “I always get asked about the bowl and have seen memes and jokes online. “Every season he has a new bowl and in season 4 he has another one. I saw a petition on Change.org from fans asking to get rid of the stalemate for the next season and I signed it! ”
Another major storyline focuses on the original core group of friends in Hawkins. Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin) joined the basketball team; Max (Sadie Sink) is grieving the loss of her brother Billy, who was tragically killed by the Mind Flayer last season; Mike (Finn Wolfhard) is trying to figure out his calls at school and maintain his long distance relationship with Eleven, and Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo) begins to tune in to navigate the hellish corridors of the high school.
“Dustin is regaining a sense of confidence and sense of self. He is finding new great friends and he feels accepted by the Hellfire Club, Hawkins High’s Dungeons & Dragons team. But he’s sad because his main cast is starting to disband,” Matarazzo said of his character this season. “Will has moved to California, and the rest of the group is starting to find new interests and new friends. It’s part of life and part of high school. It’s hard to see. We’re a separate team and for me closeness is a big theme this season because when you guys aren’t together, things get really tough. ”
Each episode of the new season is twice the length of a regular episode Strange things install, run an hour or so. Shawn Levy, the show’s director and executive producer, promises more action, but still focuses on the characters. “This show has always been an anthem for the outcasts,” said Levy, who is directing the next project. Ryan Reynolds in Deadpool 3. “Whether you’re a popular kid in high school or a kid on the sidelines, everyone knows what it feels like to be on the outside looking in. And Strange things is in many ways about a group of characters who share that experience. It’s about struggles, but also the strength that comes from struggles. “
Meanwhile, Hawkins Sheriff Jim Hopper (David Harbor) – who apparently died by sacrificing himself to close the Upside Down portal at the end of last season – is alive, but is being held in Kamchatka, Russia, at a secret facility.
“Hooper was a sadist now not that big guy on the couch eating chips and salsa,” Harbor said, wearing a custom patterned jacket. Strange things character. “This season is a whole new layer of Hopper that we have to peel back. That was really exciting for me and I hope the audience will enjoy seeing Hopper as the brutal warrior he is now. You will see him as someone who knows how to survive and fight against evil. I did the best I could to change my body, which also changes your mindset and mindset. It’s really fun, but also a challenge. ”
Strange things witnessed demogorgons, demodogs, Russian agents, and a giant Mind Flayer terrorizing the town of Hawkins. The new horror that awaits in season four is Vecna, a demo monster that has broken out of the Upside Down.
“There’s a humanoid side to Vecna, and he’s more formidable than any big bad monster we’ve had so far,” Levy teased.
Brown added of Vecna: “I was very, very scared and very nervous when I first saw it. “Nobody has seen anything like it, especially how it has been played. It’s incredible and the fans will be in awe.”
“Vecna is a psychological thriller that I don’t think we’ve actually seen,” Harbor said. “It is very calculated and psychologically evil, making it the most dangerous monster of the show. But there can be more than one monster. I do not deal directly with Vecna. There is a Demogorgon in the Russian prison that I have to deal with. There is a lot of evil that will happen in this season. ”
