Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is now confirmed as Infinity Ward’s 2022 installment in the FPS franchise and will reportedly feature a third mode called DMZ. Here we describe everything we know about the mode before starting the game.
While the latest games in the Call of Duty series are trending towards zombies as a third mode (alongside campaign and multiplayer), all reports indicate that Modern Warfare 2 will deviate in 2022 in favor of a DMZ mode.
Details on the mode are limited, but leaks and rumors mean we still have an idea of what to expect when Infinity Ward’s title releases on October 28th.
Here we’ll go over everything we know about DMZ, its similarity to Escape from Tarkov and how it fits alongside Warzone 2 and another annual installment.
While DMZ mode will appear to be part of MWII, it will reportedly be tied to the game in ways similar to Warzone and Modern Warfare 2019. As such, it is said to have its own release date and not alongside Infinity Ward’s October 28 launch title.
In fact, leaks say it will launch a few months later, sometime in 2023. However, other information contradicts these claims and establishes a Late 2022 release as more likely.
Both dates put it on a similar timescale to Warzone 2, the long-awaited BR sequel, which is also due out in late 2022 or early next year. DMZ could also launch in beta, strengthening its status as separate from that of the annual title.
Play for free
Another big leak regarding DMZ is that it will supposedly be free to play, similar to Warzone 2020. This information comes from reputable leaker RalphsValve, who has correctly published information about Vanguard and Warzone in the past.
Assuming it follows the same pattern as Warzone (which was also free-to-play), it will be accessible via MWII or as its own title, meaning you don’t need to purchase the annual installment to access DMZ mode.
DMZ Mode Details: Player Count, Map, Escape From Tarkov, More
As for the actual details on DMZ, we don’t have any confirmed gameplay from Activision or Infinity Ward yet. However, all reports suggest that it will steer the series into more realistic waters, as opposed to the fast-paced arcade-like gameplay that many associate with CoD.
It’s also set to launch with just a solo mode, with duos, trios, and quads earmarked for post-launch updates.
Rumor has it that players will be tasked with looting and working their way through various smaller environments before seeking extraction. Lobbies will range in size from 20 to 35 players, setting them up as a middle ground between classic CoD multiplayer and the latest foray into battle royale.
It appears to be the latest in a series of moves by Activision to diversify the CoD brand and ensure their player base is as broad as possible.
That’s all the information we currently have on Call of Duty’s DMZ mode. Of course, this information remains unconfirmed until Activision or Infinity Ward make official announcements regarding DMZ. We will be the first to update you if and when this is the case.
