Ms. Marvel Episode 3 Reveals The Djinn’s Malevolent Characters, But Who Are They? And what do you want from Kamala? SPOILERS FOR MS. AMAZING AHEAD…
The third episode of the latest MCU show Ms. Marvel premieres today on Disney+. The episode – which marks the halfway point of the season – was packed with emotional inserts and fun action.
However, this episode also finally revealed a major villain of the series: The Jinn.
What are the jinn?
Djinn or Djinn or Djinni are mythical creatures that originated in Middle Eastern folklore. They generally have supernatural abilities, are immortal, and often have wish-granting powers similar to those of jinns, as jinn folklore tends to overlap with jinn folklore. They also have some weaknesses, including their sensitivity to low temperatures and being forced to serve the men who bear their name.
These beings have appeared in Marvel comics before and are usually portrayed as villains since the jinn can also be viewed as demonic beings.
There’s even a Ms. Marvel comic called “Bottled Up” that came out last month and its synopsis is as follows:
To escape the city heat, Kamala Khan and her friend Nakia visit the sacred, air-conditioned halls of a local museum. Unfortunately, it’s less of a haven as the girls are blocked by sticky campers on every corner. But when one of the kids accidentally releases a Djinn trapped in an ancient Mesopotamian exhibit, Ms. Marvel must contain it before it owns a camper and escapes to the streets of New York City to wreak havoc!
Viewers may be wondering if this will be the same Djinn as the villainous group on the show. There was even a fan theory that Ms. Marvel herself, aka Kamala Khan, would be a ghost, although this has been debunked by journalist and Twitter user KC Walsh.
So I looked into the Ms. Marvel “genius” rumor and my source stated it was false, but they are definitely changing their origins, stay tuned while I try to get some clarification pic.twitter.com/F0JJ7KJWUT

Also, this screen replay appears to be an original MCU rendering of the Djinn.
What are the Djinn in Ms. Marvel?
In Ms. Marvel, the Djinn are a bunch of immortal beings, though the extent of their power is as yet unknown. They originally lived in the magical and light-filled Noor dimension, a place that doesn’t exist in any of the comics. But they’ve been mysteriously trapped on Earth since at least 1942, as Episode 3’s opening scene shows the group in India during the partition.
In previous episodes, Kamala (Imani Vellani) had seen visions of the jinn, as it is heavily implied that her grandmother, great-grandmother, and herself are also jinn. It seems likely that the mysterious bracelet her great-grandmother gave her – which triggered her powers – has something to do with the Noor dimension. Especially since the same great-grandmother, Aisha (Mehwish Hayat), is seen with the jinn in this Episode 3 opener.
Kamala’s potential love interest Kamran (Rish Shah) could also be a Djinn as his mother Namja (Nimra Bucha) is the leader of the group. And because of her feelings for Kamran, Kamala initially believes that the jinn are on her side.
However, the Djinn – possibly including Kamran – have some less than heroic goals in mind. The Djinn need Kamala’s power to open a portal so they can return to the Noor Dimension. That sounds harmless enough, but the power needed to create the portal could have sun-exploding, world-shattering abilities, which the Djinn doesn’t seem to care about. And they don’t care about hurting Kamala to get what they want.
Well, while the Djinn can go by many names, in Ms. Marvel they also go by another name: The Clandestine.
What is The Clandestine?
In the wide range of Marvel Comics, the Clandestines have a slightly chaotic continuity. They were a group of super-powered individuals first introduced in 1994’s Marvel Comics Presents #158 by Alan Davis. The group consisted of descendants of a man named Adam and a woman named Elalyth, who turned out to be a jinn herself.
While the show will likely follow its own backstory rather than that of the comics, a look back at the comics lore may provide some insight into what the show may reveal about the jinn going forward. And hopefully Kamala finds out this information before they can destroy the whole world.
The fourth episode of Ms. Marvel arrives on Disney+ next Wednesday, June 29th. Read our review of episode 3 here.
