Musikfest shooting sends crowd into panic, police say it was an ‘isolated incident’

BETHLEHEM, Pennsylvania (WPVI) — A shooting at a music festival in Lehigh County panicked guests Saturday night as people ran to safety after witnesses said a single shot was fired.

Bethlehem City Police called it an “isolated incident” that happened just before 11 p.m. at the music festival near the corner of Main Street and Lehigh Street, where thousands of concert-goers were gathered.

“Total chaos, like out of a movie. They took off, the cops responded immediately. They cornered this and made it a crime scene,” said Dave Emili, whose “Aw Shucks” Roasted Corn food truck is next to the shooting that happened.

Investigators closed the festival as a precaution after the shooting. FBI agents were also there.

“People thought it was fireworks until they realized it wasn’t,” said Henry Sanchez, who was in his Cubano Press food truck with his wife when the shooting happened. He says he locked his doors and told his wife to get on the floor.

“The crowd just burst like that. The cops got on the scene very quickly, literally 10 seconds,” he said.

Bethlehem Police said in a partial statement: “There was an isolated incident at the music festival and the festival was closed as a precautionary measure for the safety of visitors. There is no known ongoing threat to the public.”

Patrons say they are still unsettled.

“I’ve been here since the music festival started and it’s always been a great festival, but the last few years I haven’t gone as much as I used to just because of the violence,” said Rose Vega, from Bethlehem.

Vendors hope people will still come out on the last day of the festival.

“Come and enjoy the music, enjoy the great food that you can only get at this time of year at this event and just enjoy the day, it’s going to be a beautiful day,” said Jeff Terleski of Island Expressions.

Live performances are scheduled all day until 11pm. Meanwhile, the police and the Lehigh County District Attorney’s Office are investigating the shooting.
