If you’re a skin-care fanatic or just love scrolling TikTok, chances are you’ve heard of slugging. This technique has been around for years and involves applying a moisturizer to create a barrier on your skin to hold in water. If it works for your face, it will help hydrate the rest of your skin, right? Welcome to TikTok’s latest trend of nail clipping. Unlike vabbing, this can actually work.

Of course, using super moisturizing products and wearing gloves on your hands is nothing new. But like many TikTok trends, it’s being repackaged into something easier with a cute name. It all started when dermatologist @drcharlesmd1 went to TikTok to show him how he slugs his own nails. “We all know acrylates [nail product ingredients] can damage the nails,” he said. “Sliding nail cuticles can strengthen nails and protect them from water damage.”

Dr. Puza looks like he’s using kerosene to shave his nails, telling his 1 million followers: “It should be done daily.” TikTokers have caught on to the trend. Refinery29 UK senior beauty editor @jacquelinekilikita made a video showing how she helps heal her dry cuticles. She applies cuticle oil to her nails and then applies moisturizer on top. In this case, she uses Vaseline ($11.88 for a pack of 3 at Amazon). “The difference is very wild,” she said. “I’ve been doing this for my nails for over a week and my nails are in much better shape.”

Nail guru @lovefreshpaint agrees. “If your cuticles are especially dry, try this for a few weeks,” she says, and apply CND Solar Oil Cuticle and Nail Oil ($8.50 at Ulta Beauty) with Aquaphor Baby Healing Ointment Baby ($9.11 at Amazon) on top. “I do this every night before bed,” she adds.

In each case, the moisturizing oils in the nails and cuticles were trapped in the skin by the unclogging product (like Aquaphor or Vaseline), helping the hydration to penetrate the skin and stay hydrated much better. The best part? You can try it out with just a few affordable products, many of which you probably already have at home. That’s the kind of beauty trend we can go after.
