Nazanin Boniadi & Charles Edwards on Trusting Outsiders

Even though The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is set in Middle-earth, it will be a while before we see disparate factions working together in perfect communion to defeat a greater evil. Yes, we’ve seen hints of this so far, particularly in the Southlands, but many of the characters have a hard time trusting those outside of their own group.

In a conversation with Collider’s own Maggie Lovitt at New York Comic Con, Nazanin Boniadiwho plays the leader-turned Southland healer Bronwyn, Charles Edwards, who plays the elf smith Celebrimbor, commented on what it was like for her characters to develop and trust others.

Edwards believes Celebrimbor has a long way to go before it gets there, saying:

“For me I don’t think we’re quite there yet. We’ll make it. But he’s very much in his ivory tower at the moment and you know that, he ventures outside occasionally. Otherwise he’s very withdrawn.” , but people will come to him to invade this space a bit, so we’ll see how he handles it [with it].”

At Bronwyn, Boniadi says her growth throughout the season works so well because it feels deserved:

“I love that scene, episode two, where people don’t believe her in the tavern, and then she comes back and bangs her head on the orc, you know, and it’s like, ‘Oh, now you believe me,’ you know ? It’s like this room full of unbelieving people, lots of unbelieving men, and this woman, a strong woman, walking in and saying, “Here’s the evidence,” and I just find that empoweringly true, up to that point, she’s kind of been scrapped and fired, and she’s got to earn whatever it takes to earn her people’s trust, even if she’s making that speech [and] people go away. Hopefully by the end of the season she’ll have earned most of her stripes. I love it. There’s nothing quite like playing against someone you’ve earned it with.”

While Celebrimbor may be keeping to itself for now, it remains to be seen what will become of Bronwyn, newly in charge, when the series wraps up in its first season next week.
