Ncuti Gatwa Cast As the New Doctor in ‘Doctor Who’

Gatwa will be Black’s first leading role in the show’s 59-year history. Whittaker was the first woman. Former doctors include Peter Capaldi, Carpenter, David Tennant, Christopher Eccleston, Peter Davison, Tom Baker (who played the part longer than anyone, and had the famous long scarf, now ubiquitous at comic conventions), and John Pertwee.

When William Hartnell, who played the first Doctor, fell ill in 1966, he decided to leave the popular series in its fourth season. The producers decided that since The Doctor was not on this Earth, he could “reincarnate” into another form. Thus, not only did Patrick Troughton take on the role of Second Doctor, the show also ensured a method to keep the story going for decades, inspiring theatrical films, spin-offs like Torch and The Adventures of Sarah Janeradio shows, novels, comics and untold galaxies of fiction fans.

Next chapter in Which doctor? will also serve as a return for Russell T Davies like showrunners. Davies was responsible for reviving the franchise in 2005 after a 16-year hiatus. Author and author of other British hits like Queer as Folk and A very English scandal left the franchise in 2010.

Davies called Gatwa’s audition “brilliant”, as the BBC reports, and added that the Scottish actor “was our final audition. It was our last time. We thought we had someone, and then he came and stole it. “

Guardians note that, later, Which doctor? will not be produced in-house at the BBC but by a company called Bad Wolf Productions, based in Wales, founded by former Which doctor? producer Julie Gardner and Jane Tranterand is largely owned by Sony Pictures Television.

Regardless of the changes that happen behind the scenes, we believe they’re wise enough not to remove the greatest theme song in television history.
