Neil Patrick Harris apologises for Amy Winehouse corpse joke after photo resurfaces

Neil Patrick Harris has issued an apology for a joke he made about the death of Amy Winehouse.

The singer died aged 27 from alcohol poisoning on July 23, 2011. Three months after her death, Harris and her husband David Burtka hosted a Halloween party with a plate of food decorated to look like “Amy Winehouse’s corpse”.

After the photo reappeared on social media 11 years later (via BuzzFeed), Harris released a statement apologizing for the “regrettable” joke.

In a statement issued to Weekly entertainment, says Harris: “A recent reimagined photo from a Halloween themed party my husband and I held 11 years ago. It was regrettable then, and it is still regrettable to this day. Amy Winehouse is a generational talent and I apologize for any hurt this image has caused.”

Winehouse has released two albums – 2003’s “Frank” and 2006’s “Back To Black” – both to critical acclaim. After her death, a posthumous collection ‘Lioness: Hidden Treasures’ was released in 2011.

Her death and struggles with substance abuse have been the subject of numerous documentaries, including a 2015 biopic. Amy by director Asif Kapadia, who won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature.

Winehouse’s Glastonbury performance from 2007 will be released on vinyl next month, to mark the show’s 15th anniversary.

In a statement announcing the release, Glastonbury co-host Emily Eavis said: “Amy Winehouse is a Glastonbury go-getter. She comes and plays, or when she’s not working, comes and camp.

“She played in the blazing heat and heavy rain, and there were so many magical moments in her performance.”
