Sarina Wiegman leads her England women’s team against her own home country on Tuesday evening, with the Lionesses taking on the Netherlands in their second Women’s Nations League game.
Last time, when the competition was held for the first time in women’s football, England triumphed over Scotland, but it was really hard work – while the Netherlands suffered a late defeat against their own neighbours, Belgium. All four nations are in Group A1.
It’s not just about relegation and the finals; A few places at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris are also at stake for the two countries that reach the Nations League final. Top spot in the group is therefore hugely important for those with medal ambitions – including perhaps Team GB. GOAL! 34th minute – Netherlands – England 1-0
It’s coming, but there’s debate about when it’s coming!
Stanway is brought down just outside the penalty area and the rebounded ball flies straight to Van de Donk on the penalty spot; She appears to be offside, but keeps her composure, beats Lieke Martens and rolls a beautiful ball over the last defender and into the top corner.

32nd minute – Netherlands – England 0-0
Now it’s Jess Carter’s turn and makes a good block interception as the Dutch threaten down their left side.
What is probably notable is that the hosts have five players in their squad who have scored over 20 international goals – England have yet to achieve one at this point.

27th minute – Netherlands – England 0-0
England definitely have work to do here to retain more possession and create something notable in the attacking third, but we can safely say that this was (almost) half an hour of decent defensive resilience and organization.
Mary Earps had to make a truly remarkable save, but otherwise the three or sometimes five defenders were mostly outstanding.

22′ – Netherlands – England 0-0
Jill Roord bursts forward from midfield and shoots at goal from 20 yards – the Man City player doesn’t quite catch it correctly, and although Earps fouls up the stop, it’s a routine attack that’s easily remedied on the second attempt.
Another WSL player, Pelova, then weaves her way into the infield and rolls with her left foot straight at Earps – not much of a goal threat this time, but further evidence that the hosts are in the lead.

18th minute – Netherlands – England 0-0
The Netherlands are quite courageous in their approach game, as they currently lack the final pass, but they do throw numerous balls into the penalty area.
In contrast, England are slow to move their players forward but are familiar with a more targeted build-up of play, particularly on the wings. How much Daly and Bronze can get forward at full-back will be crucial to their hopes of performing well and – as shown against Scotland – also providing an additional attacking threat.

14′ – Netherlands – England 0-0
Lineth Beerensteyn runs through the middle and tries to get to the end of one of those long balls, but can’t reach it. Mary Earps goes to the edge of her territory to claim it.
Van de Donk yells at the referee a bit after feeling like she’s been fouled, but the Dutch still have it and it continues.
Russo leads an English counterattack but there is no one with her and the Lionesses are patient and go back to go forward again.

10′ – Netherlands – England 0-0
Russo advances down the left flank for the first time and plays a deep cross, but England fail to get their bodies forward to make the most of it. The Netherlands likes to apply a little pressure and then take direct action when necessary.

6′ – Netherlands – England 0-0
In the early stages, the Lionesses’ back three were under a lot of pressure. Stanway has to do a lot of work to protect them and try to get into the game from deep for England.

2′- Netherlands 0-0 England
On the move and England struggle to keep the ball in the early stages. The Netherlands will probably go on the offensive after their last defeat – they need an answer.
