Max and Helen’s upcoming wedding will be in a Level-5 crisis when a sudden storm hits New Amsterdam in the season three finale (NBC, 10/9c).
“Obviously no one planning for this storm to strike. It came for the Carolinas and then changed course quite abruptly,” previewed executive producer David Schulner. “So that’s really where everyone finds themselves, has to worry about something that, literally and figuratively, wasn’t on their radar hours earlier.”
Schulner revealed that the storm also posed unforeseen danger to Max’s fiancee, Helen, who was on a plane traveling from London to New York for their wedding for most of the episode. “So danger on the ground is what is happening in New Amsterdam. But because Helen was in the mid-Atlantic when the storm changed course, there was also some danger in the air,” Schulner warned.
And how does Max handle it when his other half is flying in the middle of a flight in the weather? “Disgusting! Terrible horrible! Its very Schulner said.
Read on as the EP talks about the future of Max and Helen, teases what awaits for Lauren/Leyla, Iggy/Martin and Reynolds, and hints at a terrifying ending.
TVLINE | Are these all external factors that Max and Helen are dealing with at their wedding?
I don’t think there is any intrinsic element from Max and Helen. At this point, I think it’s all external. However, the other couples are tackling some pretty big stuff – Leyla and Bloom, and Iggy and Martin.
TVLINE | In the final episode, Max says to Helen, “You’re going home to New York” to get married, and I think the use of the word “home” when referring to New York is derogatory. Does he want them both to stay in New York, and what does that mean for her work in London, if so?
That is for next season. In this season, I think they just said, “F – k it! Let’s get married The current. I do not wanna wait. I don’t want to deal with all the logistics. I just wanted to commit,” and I think that’s where Max comes from. Like, “We’ll figure out the rest. But I don’t want to wait another minute.”
TVLINE | Any thoughts on Max not taking up the job of medical director in New Amsterdam with Veronica gone?
Not quite. He just focused on Sharpe. I don’t think he has any second thoughts.
TVLINE | Lauren and Leyla sleeping together in the final episode, how will crossing that line change, their relationship like?
It was their big journey in the finale. And at the end we will reveal where that relationship will go in the end.
TVLINE | Now that Reynolds has found his dad, what’s his next move in this finale?
Reynolds was on his way to confront his father when the storm hit. So it was too late to return now for him. This is what he has been waiting all his life to do. So when he finally reaches his father, a hurricane hits and his plans for reconciliation or confrontation, finding the answers he needs, are all thrown out. window.
TVLINE | Iggy revealed a lot more about Martin than in the previous episode. Where does that leave them? Is that a good thing or a bad thing for them?
Whether Iggy is right or wrong is what this episode is about him. I know a lot of people were angry at Iggy for blaming Martin, and Iggy was angry at Iggy for blaming Martin. Is the whole episode really about him right or wrong?
TVLINE | How do you know that next season is the one that will ultimately shape your approach to this finale?
Let me think about the moment we found out… I’m hesitant to say it doesn’t change anything, because I think the finale is pre-written. The finale is more reflective [Episode] 401 more than anything related to Part 5. You end up where you started. And so we want 401 to set this trajectory for Max and Sharpe, and this is clearly where it leads.
TVLINE | 401’s theme is “more fun”. So does that mean that fans will have something to celebrate at the end of this finale?
[Laughs] I do not know. It’s funny, I always hear “more fun” because that’s what the characters want. That doesn’t mean I’ll give it to anyone. But the characters are looking for fun, and it’s not easy.
TVLINE | What are we in the store for? How torture will the wait be?
I can’t tell you that! [Laughs] Part 1, we had to take on a great challenge. Season 2, we were robbed of that because we couldn’t finish filming our part because of COVID. Season 3 is that Max and Sharpe are finally together, and we close the door for audiences before they can see what happens next. So event-watching is something that we obviously love to do and want to give the audience the same kind of anticipation for next season, so you can definitely expect something.
