New Orleans Saints’ Trevor Penning kicked out of practice after third incident in three days

New Orleans Saints rookie left tackle Trevor Penning and defensive tackle Malcolm Roach were both kicked out of practice Wednesday afternoon after hot temper sparked a riot involving several other teammates.

A teammate came in and shoved Penning after the initial issue between him and Roach, causing at least 10 other players to come off the sidelines and join the fight.

Saints coach Dennis Allen spoke loudly to the team after the conclusion of practice, saying he plans to speak with both Roach and Penning ahead of Thursday’s practice.

“We don’t have time for that,” Allen said. “I sent two guys in today and we have work to do. We have to learn as a team how to compete and how to play and how to train and push your limits but it still doesn’t take the edge.

“… It’s not uncommon for something like this to happen in training camp. It’s certainly something we don’t want to see. It’s being addressed and we’ll move on.”

It was the third straight practice session that Penning, a 2022 first-round pick, was involved in an altercation with a defensive teammate.

He blocked defensive end Payton Turner, a 2021 first-round pick, on Monday when Turner looked to beat him late in the game. Penning shoved him and the two briefly threw punches before it broke apart.

“It’s football, we compete against each other,” said Penning on Monday. “It’s a tough game for tough people and you have to be able to endure that. There is no bad blood between us. We are just competitors competing against each other.”

On Tuesday, safety JT Gray Penning shoved after a block. Penning took a few steps towards Gray but stopped and walked away after a teammate grabbed his arm.

Penning joined the Saints with a reputation for having a mean streak during his time in Northern Iowa.

“It’s like when you think he’s done, he’s far from done,” said teammate Cesar Ruiz. “He definitely has that finishing mentality that you love in an offensive lineman.”

Penning said playing to the whistle is part of his nature.

“It’s part of my game, I think. That’s just how I am as a player,” Penning said on Monday. “But I’m obviously out there working on the tech. I’m trying to improve the game’s technique and break down the blocks. The ability to finish, that’s something I’m proud of and that’s always going to be a part of my game.” New Orleans Saints’ Trevor Penning kicked out of practice after third incident in three days
