New York house music legend Joeski shares ten highlights from his Maya Records label.
JOESKI is one of the most prolific house music producers in the world.
The New York DJ and producer looks back on a career spanning three decades and founded his label Maya Records in 2001 with the classic Hustler’s Revenge. While his collaboration with DJ Chus on “El Amor” propelled the label to the forefront of the US house music sound that would become a global phenomenon, it also brought Joeski worldwide recognition as both a producer and DJ. Since then he has been at the forefront of house music.
He just released his own track Afro Acid – the label’s 211th. To mark the occasion, we caught up with Joeski and asked him to put together a playlist of ten highlights from his awesome Maya Records, a list that includes a look at the label’s 212th release Label by Joeski featuring Jackie Wells with the upcoming track Aruma .
Listen below and read what Joeski has to say about each tune.
6400 Crew Present Joeski – Hustlers Revenge – Maya 001
The first release on Maya Records 🙂 I had been playing it for a while and it got a great response on the dance floor so I decided to start the label with this release and it became my biggest hit on vinyl of 2000.
Joeski & Chus – El Amor – Maya 003
In 2001 I was first booked to perform in Madrid (Spain) where I met DJ Chus and we got together and started working in the studio on this song which became our summer anthem in 2001.
J & S Productions – Te Quiero – Maya 005
I was in Spain and met Silla which eventually became J&S Joeski & Silla Productions. This was the first release we did and we ended up doing a lot of tracks together.
Joeski – Aruma with Jackie Wells – Maya212
I’ve steered Maya Records in a more vocal afro house direction and I’m really excited for this album. A beautiful song written and sung by Jackie Wells. (This track is out soon on Maya Records and will be released on August 12th).
Afrikali – Out Of The Jungle (Joeski 2003 Remix) – Maya012
I was a big fan of the original which came out on Easy Street Records in the 90’s so I licensed it and remixed it and it became a big record for me in South America.
Joeski – Hey guys – Maya159
I’ve always been a big fan of funk and soul and for this one I sampled Lyn Collins. This was one of my biggest releases after the label went digital-only towards funkier house vibes.
Joeski featuring E Man – I Remember House – Maya144
The inspiration for this song was all my favorite classic house tracks. This was an ode to her with the legendary E-Man on vocals narrating the story.
Joeski & Djulz – A Night on Clerry Street – Maya003
I was in Paris for a gig and met Djulz there. I ended up staying in the studio with him for a week and collaborating on some big tracks. This was one of them that I ended up putting out.
Joeski. – Tierra Linda feat Canalon De Timbiqui – Maya188
This record was recorded in my home country of Colombia. I always dreamed of collaborating with local musicians there and when I got the opportunity I was very excited. There is so much great talent in this country that this one is special.
Joeski – Afro-Latinism – Maya207
I was very touched when I heard the poem that gave rise to this title. A very powerful poem that inspired this and more recently became a major publication for Maya.
